Applauding the Blossom

Suddenly I realize
That if I stepped out of my body I would break
Into blossom.

--James Wright from “A Blessing”

On this island, flowers blossom the year round.
When they fall, others open in their place.

O to be petal, breeze, sunlight, water, salt.
To be the kingfisher that lands on palm branches,
watches the world out of one eye, then lifts away
to the fronds' applause.

To lift skyward.

To turn every fall into flight.
